# Building MCP Servers for AI Agents

## Summary

## Why MCP Matters

AI agents need tools. Without a standard protocol, every agent-tool integration is a custom adapter. MCP solves this by providing a JSON-RPC over HTTP (or stdio) protocol that any LLM client can use.

## Key Design Principles

1. **Tool granularity** — Each tool should do one thing well. Avoid mega-tools with optional parameters for unrelated operations.
2. **Structured responses** — Return JSON, not free-form text. Agents parse JSON; they guess at text.
3. **Error codes** — Use consistent error codes, not HTTP status alone. An agent needs to know if a failure is retryable.
4. **Discovery** — Expose a tool list endpoint so agents can self-discover capabilities.

## Common Patterns

- **Read tools** — Query data without side effects (safe, idempotent)
- **Action tools** — Perform mutations (require payment or auth)
- **Search tools** — Fuzzy matching across datasets
